Tell us about your dog and you will get an honest answer on whether a 1-2-1 is the right next step.
Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows together form the busiest off-lead space in Edinburgh, and that single fact explains most of the training problems in these two neighbourhoods. On a dry evening there can be dozens of dogs on the grass at once, many of them belonging to students who are out for half an hour between lectures. Your dog is learning something from every one of those encounters, whether you planned it or not.
The housing is the other half. Marchmont in particular is dominated by shared tenement flats with high turnover, so dogs live with changing routines, changing flatmates and no private outdoor space. Add the mature trees along the Links, which hold a serious squirrel population, and you get a very specific mix: an over-socialised, under-settled dog with a strong chase habit.
A dog is only as reliable as the hardest place you ask it to be reliable. Here is what each Bruntsfield & Marchmont route actually demands.
| Walking spot | What it throws at your dog | What we work on there |
|---|---|---|
| Bruntsfield Links | Dozens of off-lead dogs, constant movement | Recall in genuine competition, calling away from play |
| The Meadows | Long straight paths, cyclists, joggers, frisbees | Holding position, ignoring fast movement, a reliable stop |
| Tree lines along the Links | Heavy squirrel activity at head height | Interrupting a chase before it starts |
| Shared tenement flat | No garden, changing routines, thin walls | Settling on cue, calm alone-time, a workable toilet routine |
The typical Bruntsfield or Marchmont dog is not shy. It is wired.
The work usually starts indoors, teaching the dog how to switch off, before anything is attempted out on the grass.
The full treatment of the two biggest problems here is at recall training in Edinburgh and dog behaviour training in Edinburgh. Before booking, you might read mental stimulation is pure training magic or how often you should train your dog.
Allan travels to Bruntsfield & Marchmont — approximately 10 min from base. In-person sessions from £190 (£150 for members), with no separate travel charge for this area.
Here the session tends to start indoors and stay there longer than owners expect. Teaching a dog to switch off in a flat with no garden is the foundation; the Links and the Meadows are where that foundation gets tested, usually later the same session. What you take away is a plan that fits your week, rather than a set of tricks.
Not everything needs a visit. Plenty of behaviour work begins on Zoom, so arrange a 1-2-1 at your home and Allan will tell you which suits your situation.
| Session type | Standard | Member rate |
|---|---|---|
| Home session, two hours in person | £190 | £150 |
| Zoom session, two hours | £120 | £90 |
| Zoom session, one hour | £60 | £45 |

Behind Clan Dog is Allan Ritchie MGoDT (MPDTI): RAF dog handler, former Police officer on rapid-response and hostage-rescue duties, and later the owner of a kennel and training centre.
Allan's work with high-drive service dogs was built on the same principle: a dog that cannot settle cannot think, and a dog that cannot think cannot learn. That applies just as much to a student flat in Marchmont. You are the constant in your dog's life, not the trainer. Bruntsfield & Marchmont sessions are designed around that fact. You can read more about Allan and how Clan Dog works.
“If I could give Allan 10 stars, 100 stars whatever the max is I would!”Paul D — published Google review. Clan Dog is rated 4.9/5 based on 39 reviews.
Independent guidance behind the advice on this page for Bruntsfield & Marchmont owners:
It can, but not by starting there. The Links is the final exam, not the first lesson. Recall is built in quieter conditions and then tested in stages, and a long line keeps everyone safe while that is happening.
It changes the plan rather than blocking it. Toilet training, decompression and alone-time all need a different structure without a garden, and that structure is a normal part of a session here.
A long, high-arousal walk can leave a dog more wound up than when it left. Physical exercise and mental satisfaction are not the same thing, and the fix is usually a change in what the walk contains rather than how long it lasts.
Yes, both are covered as one area and sit around 10 minutes from base. In-person sessions are £190 for approximately two hours, or £150 for Clan Dog members.
If your dog is wired rather than badly behaved, the fix is different from what most classes will tell you. For a stress-free life with your dog.
